Verslagje – Home Food Production – 10 december

 Many people dream about growing their own food, but few know where to start. Those that do, quickly discover that it is rewarding nutritionally, socially and spiritually. Home-scale food production can be made easy with the proper observation and planning. It is also not only limited to those with a large backyard. Permaculture design introduces you to a world where the problem is the solution, where limited space means unlimited opportunity to stack functions.

This course will cover all the basics of Permaculture Garden Design and how it can be applied to many different settings. We will focus mostly on home food production and design systems for 3 different scales: urban, suburban and rural. The structure of this course integrates brief lectures, design exercises and discussions.

Lectures:
* Whole-systems thinking
* Pattern Literacy (Reading Nature)
* Food Production
* Forest Gardening

Exercises:
* Functional analysis of garden elements
* Honing one’s observation skills
* Creating a plan (schedule, schematic design) for a food production site.
* Hands-on (!) fermentation activity

Discussion:
* The state of the world from a designer’s perspective
* Strategies for community-based food sovereignty
* There will also be plenty opportunities for questions, comments and free discussion.

It offers a good opportunity for like-minded people to get together and learn something from each other. Please remember to bring an empty glass jar (or a few, if you’d like!

Mihail Kossev
Mihail has been teaching and designing Permaculture since 2007. He received his undergraduate education from New York University where he studied film, fine art and pedagogy. After graduation, he has specialized in Environmental Education, working with a wide diversity of ages and formats. He also ran an organic farm, putting permaculture principles into practice for local markets. This experience shaped his views on the concept of a sustainable economy. For the last two years, he has been touring Europe and the US teaching workshops on the subjects of Permaculture Design, Forest Gardening, Sustainable Food Systems, Seed-saving, Non-violent Communication and Soil Science. Mihail is currently developing a forest garden and nursery with the Balkan Ecology Project (www.balkEP.org) in Central Bulgaria.

Past projects include: Permaship (www.permaship.org), Collected Seed Farm and Edible Landscapes: Brooklyn.

The workshop will be held in English. Questions are welcome in both English and Dutch.
